Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers won their fifth game in a row on Friday night at Boomers Stadium, in a 12 inning, 3-1 victory over the Schaumburg Boomers to take the opening game of the series.
The victory for the Crushers (15-16) improves their record to 3-1 in games with extra frames, and they've now played three extra inning contests over the last six days. The loss for the Boomers (19-13) was their second in a row.
The pitching was sensational on both sides all night long. Lake Erie starting pitcher Alex Kaminsky allowed just an unearned run on five hits over six solid innings of work while fanning four, and the Lake Erie Bullpen dominated the final six innings.
The combination of Ben Klafczynski, Jordan Wellander, Mickey Jannis (3-0) and Dale Dickerson (4) combined to toss six scoreless innings of one hit relief to hold the Boomers' offense in check.
Schaumburg struck first in the bottom of the sixth inning. Gerard Hall began the inning with a double, and scored moments later. Frank Pfister hit a fly ball to left field, that Ricardo Lizcano dropped, and the error allowed Hall to score.
Lizcano redeemed himself in the top of the eighth inning, when he reached on a leadoff double. David Roney's groundout to first pushed Lizcano over to third, and with the Boomer infield drawn in, Juan Sanchez belted a single back up the middle to score Lizcano and tied the game at 1-1.
The game remained tied at 1-1, until the Crushers plated a pair in the 12th inning. Andrew Davis began the inning with a solo homer to snap the tie. He obliterated Devon Pearson's (0-1) 3-1 pitch off the scoreboard beyond the wall in left field for his seventh bomb of the season.
Lake Erie added one more to give them a little breathing room. Russ Moldenhauer followed Davis with a routine fly ball to center field that Alexi Colon dropped. The error put Moldenhauer on second base, and Daniel Bowman bunted him over to third. The Boomers intentionally walked Lizcano to put runners at the corners, and Roney followed with a single through the right side to score Moldenhauer.
Jannis scored the victory for Lake Erie, tossing three perfect innings of relief and he fanned four batters along the way. Dickerson scored the save after tossing a scoreless 12th inning, and Pearson took the loss after allowing a pair of runs on two hits through two innings of relief.
The bottom half of the Lake Erie batting order did a lot of damage, as six hit safely for the Crushers on the night. Lizcano led the way with a 2-for-3 performance and reached four times on the night, while Kevin Berard had a pair of hits, going 2-for-5 with a single and a double.
The Crushers will continue their three game series against the Schaumburg Boomers at Boomers Stadium on Saturday night. The Crushers have not announced their starter and the Boomers will start righty Mike Giovenco (2-3, 4.66). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
