Joliet Slammers News Release

(Joliet, IL) - Rookie Matt Dillon did not pitch like a rookie on Friday night against the Gateway Grizzlies.

Dillon, in his professional debut was impressive in front of the second largest crowd of the year at Silver Cross Field, as 3,417 watched Dillon shutout Gateway through five innings, striking out 10. However, once again Joliet (12-19) could not provide the run support to get him the victory as the Slammers fell 3-1 to the Grizzlies (20-10) at home.

JaVaun West (5-1) was just as dominant for Gateway, tossing seven innings, while only allowing one run and striking out 10 batters as well.

Joliet did manage to score first in this ballgame with Kyle Maunus leading off the third inning with a double and Marquis Riley sending him home on a sacrifice fly to left field.

It was however the only run of the night for the Slammers as the offense continues to disappoint, only recording three hits with two of them by Jerod Yakubik.

Gateway tied the game in the top of the seventh inning after three scoreless innings. Antone DeJesus reached safely on a one-out double and scored on a broken-bat fielders-choice from Alex Guthrie making it a 1-1 score.

The Grizzlies then tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the eighth, with Jose Flores scoring on a RBI single for Jet Butler and Landon Hernandez touching home on a RBI double for Jon Myers making it a 3-1 score that would last the distance on Friday for the Grizzlies.

The Slammers will try to rebound in the series on Saturday with Evan Anundsen (3-3) receiving the start. The game starts at 6:05 p.m. with the pre game on 1340 WJOL coming at 5:50 p.m.
