Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
NORMAL, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums scored four runs during the seventh and eighth innings, but the Beach Bums were unable to withstand five unearned fifth inning runs from the Normal CornBelters as the Normal upended the Beach Bums 9-4 on Friday night.
The game was scoreless into the third inning when Mike Schwartz homered following a Jenzen Torres double to make it 2-0 CornBelters. In the fifth, Keoni Manago reached on an error to begin the inning and was sacrificed to third by Santiago Chirino. Torres singled home Manago to make it 3-0 Normal. Following a fly out for the second out of the inning, the CornBelters got four batters in a row to reach, plating four more runs to make it 7-0. Two more Normal tallies crossed in the sixth to make it 9-0.
The Beach Bums got the offense going in the seventh as Jose Vargas walked and advanced to second on a foul out. Two batters later, Zach Kometani singled through the left side to score Vargas.
In the eighth, Traverse City loaded the bases off CornBelters reliever, Mitch Mormann as Sean Gusrang and Ryan Still singled, sandwiched around a walk by D'Marcus Ingram. After Gusrang was erased on a fielder's choice by Taylor Wrenn and a strikeout by Vargas, Chase Burch singled to plate Ingram and Still, making it 9-3. Carlo Testa then stroked a ground-rule double to left, bringing home Wrenn to create the final score.
The win went to Tyler Lavigne (3-2) who pitched seven innings allowing two hits and one run. Jake Sabol (5-2) took the loss for the Beach Bums, allowing seven runs, only two of them earned, over 4.2 innings. Kyle Teague made his professional debut in relief of Sabol and pitched exceptionally well, striking out seven batters in 3.1 innings.
Offensively, Gusrang had three hits and the single by Burch extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Taylor Wrenn went 0-for-4, seeing his hitting streak come to an end at a 2013 Frontier League best 21 contests.
The middle game of the series comes up on Saturday with Johnny Omahen (1-3, 6.20) facing off against Ross Davis (2-2, 4.94) for Normal. First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 pm with the Budweiser Pregame Show on Sunny Country 101.9 FM beginning at 7:40 pm. The Beach Bums return home on Tuesday for a nine-game homestand beginning against the Schaumburg Boomers on a Two For Tuesday with 2-fpr-1 pricing on all chairback seats.
