
Boomers Suffer First Extra-Inning Defeat

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Schaumburg Boomers lost an extra-inning contest for the first time this season, falling 3-1 in 12 innings to the Lake Erie Crushers in the opener of a series Friday night before 4,636 fans.
Starter Chris Phelan continued to establish himself as one of the top pitchers in the league, allowing just one run in eight innings. Phelan struck out a career best six, allowing just four hits. The righty lowered his already stellar ERA to just 1.89. Schaumburg nabbed a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth when Gerard Hall, who doubled, scored on a dropped fly ball. Hall finished with three hits in the game. Lake Erie evened the game in the eighth and plated two in the 12th against Devon Pearson to earn the win. Andrew Davis homered for the Crushers to open the frame. Schaumburg, who finished 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position, has played five six-inning games this season including three 12-inning affairs.
The Boomers (19-13) will continue the series on Saturday night with a 6:00 p.m. contest. RHP Mike Giovenco (2-3, 4.66) starts for Schaumburg. Lake Erie has yet to name a starter.
