Slammers vs. Grizzlies - Game Notes - June 21, 2013

Last time out...

The Evansville Otters scored two runs in the first inning and never trailed as they defeated the Slammers by a score of 3-1 on Thursday night. John Schultz led off the inning with a triple against Joliet starter Corey Kimes and C.J. Henry followed with a triple of his own to give the Otters a 1-0 lead. A Frank Martinez RBI grounder made the score 2-0. Kimes settled down after that and went seven strong innings for the Slammers. But Joliet's offense had no answer for Ryan Zamorsky. He went seven innings and only allowed one run, which game in the seventh on a Michael Wing solo home run, his second homer of the year. The Otters tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on a Sam Mahoney RBI single to extend their lead to 3-1. Joliet managed only four hits in the contest as they dropped the series to Evansville two games to one.

For Starters...

Rookie Matt Dillon is making his professional debut tonight. The right-hander went 11-1 with a 1.86 ERA during his senior season at Mount Olive College in 2013. He struck out 108 batters in 106.1 innings.

Looking to turn things around...

The Slammers are currently a season high six games under .500 and a season worst 5th place in the West Division. They will look to get that turned around starting tonight against the first place Grizzlies.

Speaking of Gateway...

Manager Mike Breyman has a long history with Gateway, having played with the Grizzlies for five seasons and coached there as well. The Slammers have a number of ex-Grizzlies on their team, including starting pitcher Brett Zawacki, relief pitcher Jonathan Gonzalez and outfielder/first baseman Jerod Yakubik.

Back home...

The Slammers return home tonight where they have posted a 7-8 record on the season but they have won three of the five series they have played at Silver Cross Field this season.

Innings wise...

The Slammers have had a lot of success in the second inning, out-scoring opponents 21-5. They have been far less successful in the sixth inning, getting out-scored 24-5.

Efficiency...

David Christensen leads the Slammers with six stolen bases and he has not been caught yet in 2013.

Friday Fireworks...

The Slammers are 2-0 so far this season in Friday home games; they are 0-3 in Friday road games.

Holding on...

The Slammers have posted an impressive 10-1 record when leading after six innings this season. However they are 2-17 when tied are trailing after six.

High five!

The Slammers continue to dominate when scoring five or more runs as they have a 9-1 record in that situation. They are 3-17 when scoring fewer than five runs.

Hits matter...

The Slammers are 10-2 when they out-hit the opponent. But they are 1-16 when they get out-hit.

Where are the runs?

The Slammers have scored only 109 runs this season, the fewest in the Frontier League.

Slammers' pitching has struck out 233 batters so far this season; second most in the Frontier League.

Transaction Wire...

The Slammers sold the contract of INF Matt Mercurio to the Kansas City Royals today.
