Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, IL - Miners starter Travis Bradshaw turned in his longest outing of the season as he went seven innings and struck out seven batters but didn't factor in the decision. The Miners lost to the Florence Freedom 5-4 and fell to 16-15 on the season. The Miners continued to hit the ball as they recorded ten hits.

The Miners took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Freedom starter Justice French on a sacrifice fly by Gerardo Avila to score Jon Eisen. Cannon Lester hit a RBI single off French in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Miners a 2-0 lead.

Florence tied the game off Bradshaw in the top of the sixth inning as Freedom rightfielder Byron Wiley hit a two run home run. Southern Illinois bounced right back in the bottom of the sixth as Jason Ganek hit a two run home run, his first of the season, to give the Miners a 4-2 lead.

Dayne Quist came in to relieve Bradshaw in the top of the eighth inning and allowed three runs to give Florence their first lead of the night, 5-4. The Miners would put two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't convert as the Freedom won 5-4.

Matt Sergey pitched 2/3 of an inning in the seventh and struck out two batters. Reese McGraw pitched a scoreless eighth inning, his first appearance in eight days.

The Miners look even up the series on Saturday as Brian Oliver (2-3, 4.21 ERA) will take the mound. First pitch gets underway at 7:05 pm. Mike Ventola will have the call on the Miners Radio Network beginning at 6:45 pm with the Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show.
