CornBelters Dominate Beach Bums

NORMAL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, broke a three-game losing streak and stopped Traverse City's eight-game winning streak with a 9-4 victory on Friday at the Corn Crib. The series continues on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Corn Crib

The CornBelters scored first on a two-run homer by Mike Schwartz, who cleared the right field fence with a line drive in the corner in the third inning.

The Belters reached Bums starter Jake Sabol for five runs in the fifth inning, including a two-RBI double from T.J. Gavlik and RBIs from Pat McKenna, Luis De La Cruz and Jenzen Torres.

Normal scored twice more in the sixth, loading the bases on reliever Kyle Teague and getting an RBi single from Pat McKenna and a sacrifice fly from Mike Mobbs to give the hosts an 8-0 lead after six innings.

Traverse City scored in the seventh when Jose Vargas led off with a walk, advanced to third on two fielder's choices and scored on a two-out single by Zach Kometani. The Bums added three more in the eighth when they loaded the bases and got a two-run single from Chase Burch and an RBI double from Carlo Testa to cut the Belters lead to 9-4.

Tyler Lavigne (2-2) gave up only two hits in his seven innings of work with three walks and two strikeouts to pick up the win. Beach Bums starter Jake Sabol (5-2) took the loss.
