Washington Wild Things News Release

On "Prom Night" at CONSOL Energy Park it was clear that starter Shawn Sanford and second baseman CJ Beatty were the two Prom Kings of the diamond in the Washington Wild Things', presented by Washington Financial, 5-2 win over the River City Rascals.

Sanford (5-1) worked six and 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three. Beatty was 3-for-4 hitting his team leading seventh home run, plus drove in four runs.

After a three inning stalemate, Washington (16-13) scored all the runs they would need in the bottom of the fourth.

Shortstop Shain Stoner opened the frame with a lead-off single, then the next batter, designated hitter Mark Samuelson, scored him on a RBI double. After third baseman Jovan Rosa hit a single, Beatty took River City's Justin Sarratt (1-4) over the right field wall, giving Washington a 4-0 lead.

In the next inning Washington looked like they were going to add to their lead. Back-to-back singles by catcher Jim Vahalik and center fielder Darian Sandford lead to a Stoner sac bunt. First baseman Stewart Ijames was intentionally walked to load the bases. The Wild Things were unable to capitalize on this opportunity as Sarratt induced two groundball outs to Samuelson and Rosa.

River City (12-18) finally got in the score column in the top of the sixth.

Third baseman Sean Borman doubled off the top of the center field wall, scoring left fielder Jake Atwell, and cutting the Wild Things' lead to three.

Continuing to hack at the Washington lead, the Rascals scored another run in top of seventh. With two outs and shortstop Johnny Morales on second, center fielder Curran Redal lobbed a Texas-leaguer over second base scoring the speedy Morales.

Sanford walked the next batter, right fielder Evan Crawford, so skipper Bart Zeller brought in lefty Matt Phillips with runners on first and second. One pitch to first baseman Phil Wunderlich, Phillps popped him out to Stoner to keep the Wild Thing lead intact at 4-2.

Phillips returned to the mound in the in the top of the eighth and struck out the side in 14 pitches.

Beatty added his fourth RBI, and Washington's fifth run of the day in the bottom of the eight on a hit and run with Samuelson on first.

Washington and River City play game two of this series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. with the first 1,000 fans to CONSOL Energy Park receiving a team photo.

Tickets can be purchased at the CONSOL Energy Park box office or by calling (724)250-9995.
