June 30, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Salt Lake Bees News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - Salt Lake infielder Kaleb Cowart has been chosen to represent the Bees in the 2016 Triple-A All Star Game, the Pacific Coast League announced today. Cowart leads the Bees in doubles, home runs and RBIs while primarily handling duties at third base for Salt Lake.
The 29th Annual Sonic Automotive Triple-A All-Star game will be held at BB&T Ballpark in Charlotte, North Carolina. The game will be broadcast nationally on MLB Network starting at 5:00 p.m. MT on Wednesday, July 13.
Cowart, 24, was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the first round of the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft out of Cook High School in Adel, Georgia and is rated as the number five overall prospect in the Angels organization according to MLB.com. Last year, Cowart made his MLB debut with the Angels on August 18, 2015 and collected his first big league hit on August 22, 2015 with a home run off Toronto starter Marco Estrada.
The switch-hitting third baseman becomes the 34th Triple-A All-Star in franchise history. Other notable Salt Lake All-Stars include Jett Bandy (2015), Kole Calhoun (2012), Mark Trumbo (2010), Howie Kendrick (2006) and Todd Walker (2000).
The International League has won three straight meetings and 10 of the last 12, including last season's 4-3 victory in Omaha. The IL holds an 11-7 record against the PCL in the 18 years since the event changed to the current IL vs. PCL format. The winner will again earn the right to have its champion play as the "home team" at the Gildan Triple-A National Championship Game, taking place Tuesday, September 20, at Memphis' AutoZone Park.
The Bees are back home beginning Thursday night for a four-game Independence weekend series with fireworks postgame on Friday and Saturday night. The ballpark will also host "Fourth On The Field" on July 4 with a backyard party on the field at Smith's Ballpark with fireworks at 10 p.m. Tickets and more information is available at www.slbees.com.
