
Nicholas, Roth Named PCL All-Stars

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express will be sending quite the battery to the 2016 Triple-A All-Star Game, presented by Gildan. The Pacific Coast League announced its roster for the 29th annual event on Thursday afternoon with C Brett Nicholas and LHP Michael Roth both selected to the squad to represent the Express.
Nicholas, 27, is currently batting a team-best .312 (min. 40 plate appearances) with five home runs and 30 RBI. He started the season with the Express before the Texas Rangers purchased his contract on April 10. He made his major league debut on May 11 and went 9-35 (.257) in 10 games with the Rangers. He returned to the Express on May 6. The Arizona native leads the Express in OBP (.395 - min. 40 plate appearances) and doubles (16). This is Nicholas' first Triple-A All-Star appearance. He was a member of the Texas League All-Star team in 2013.
Roth, 26, has spent the entire 2016 season with the Express after the Texas Rangers signed him to a minor league deal in February. He started the season out of the bullpen, compiling a 1-0 record with a 1.86 ERA (9.2ip/2er) in five relief appearances. Since being added to the starting rotation in May, the left-hander has gone 6-3 with a 2.76 ERA (71.2ip/22er) in 12 starts. The South Carolina native currently leads the PCL with a 2.66 overall ERA (81.1ip/24er). His opponent batting average (.223) and WHIP (1.06) are second in the league. The lefty was named the PCL Player of the Week for June 20-26. This is his first Triple-A All-Star nod.
The full starting roster includes C Manny Pina (Colorado Springs), 1B Daniel Vogelbach (Iowa), 2B Carlos Asuaje (El Paso), 3B T.J. Rivera (Las Vegas), SS Orlando Arcia (Colorado Springs), OF Kyle Jensen (Reno), OF Hunter Renfroe (El Paso), OF Stefen Romero (Tacoma) and DH Travis Taijeron (Las Vegas). Fresno's Brady Rodgers and Las Vegas' Gabriel Ynoa were tabbed as the starters while Fresno's James Hoyt and Tacoma's Blake Parker were named as featured relievers.
The Pacific Coast League reserves include catchers Tuffy Gosewisch (Reno) and Brett Nicholas (Round Rock); infielders Kaleb Coward (Salt Lake), Casey McElroy (El Paso), Chad Pinder (Nashville) and Rob Segedin (Oklahoma City); outfielders Gorkys Hernandez (Sacramento), Destin Hood (New Orleans) and Jordan Patterson (Albuquerque); and pitchers Mike Hauschild (Fresno), Damien Magnifico (Colorado Springs), Brooks Pounders (Omaha), Armando Rivero (Iowa), Michael Roth (Round Rock), Patrick Schuster (Nashville), Braden Shipley (Reno) and Sam Tuivailala (Memphis).
The 2016 Triple-A All-Star Game presented by Gildan is scheduled for Wednesday, July 13 at 6:00 p.m. CDT from BB&T Ballpark, home of the Charlotte Knights. The contest will be broadcast live on the MLB Network, the American Forces Network, MiLB.TV, the Triple-A All-Star Game Radio Network and the MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM Channel 89.
