Zephyrs' Hood Named to PCL All-Star Team
June 30, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Metairie, LA - New Orleans Zephyrs outfielder Destin Hood has been named to the 2016 Pacific Coast League All-Star team.
Hood will participate in the Triple-A All-Star Game, pitting PCL All-Stars against International League All- Stars, on Wednesday, July 13 at BB&T Ballpark in Charlotte, N.C. The 29th annual matchup will be broadcast live on MLB Network at 7:00 p.m. Central Time.
A second round selection by the Washington Nationals in 2008 out of Mobile's St. Paul's Episcopal High School, where he was Alabama's 5A Player of the Year, Hood declined football and baseball scholarships to the University of Alabama to sign with the Nationals.
Signed by the Miami Marlins as a minor league free agent last November, Hood enters play on Friday tied for fourth in the PCL with 55 runs batted in, putting him on pace to become the first player in New Orleans history to reach the 100-RBI plateau. Hood slugged a grand slam in his first at-bat of the season on April 7 in Omaha and did not slow down in April, batting .320 with six home runs and 22 RBI in 20 games en route to being named Marlins Minor League Player of the Month.
Hood is receiving All-Star recognition for the third time in his nine-year professional career, following nods from the South Atlantic League in 2010 with Hagerstown and from the Carolina League in 2011 with Potomac. He is the first Zephyrs position player to be elected to the midsummer classic since 2011, when outfielder Bryan Petersen and catcher Vinny Rottino were honored.
The Zephyrs return home on Monday at 6 p.m. against the Round Rock Express with the annual 4th of July celebration. Festivities include a pregame concert with Crescent City Kings, a mini-American flag giveaway, and Independence Day fireworks.
