All-Star Gosewisch Hits Two Homers in Aces' Loss
June 30, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release
EL PASO - Fresh off a third midseason All-Star nomination and second in the Pacific Coast League, Tuffy Gosewisch (@santiagosewisch) blasted two home runs for a second time this season and fourth time in his career, but the Reno Aces saw their rally fall short in an 8-6 loss to the El Paso Chihuahuas on Thursday night at Southwest University Park.
The Aces (42-38) never led after solo home runs from Hector Sanchez and Manuel Margot staked the Chihuahuas to a 2-0 lead.
Gosewisch's first homer came off El Paso starter Michael Kelly with two away in the fourth, cutting the deficit in half at 2-1.
El Paso (47-33) answered in the home half with a run of their own, pushing their lead back to two. With runners at first and second and two away, Diego Goris lined a 3-2 offering from Aces starter Zack Godley (@godleyzt) into center, scoring Austin Hedges from second base.
Limited on a pitch count, Godley was removed after four innings of work. His successor, Edgar Garcia, struggled mightily in the fifth. The right-hander issued a leadoff walk before inducing a double play, setting up for a quick inning. The Chihuahuas instead had six consecutive batters reach, the big blow coming off the bat of Sanchez again. The switch-hitting catcher belted a three-run homer to right to make it 6-1. A pair of walks followed and Goris came through again, delivering a two-run double to right-center.
Down 8-1 thru five frames, the Aces responded with five runs of their own in the top half of the sixth.
Zach Borenstein and Ed Lucas (@ELuke21) collected a single and double with one away, paving the way for Todd Glaesmann (@toddglaesmann22) who laced a two-run double to right. Gosewisch followed with his second homer down the left-field line, pulling the Aces within three. Following a strikeout, a walk and single set up a run-scoring single by Mitch Haniger (@M_Hanny19), but the Aces couldn't come through with the tying run at the dish in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Godley (2-1) suffered the loss after yielding three earned runs on five hits over four innings. He walked two and recorded a season-high seven strikeouts in defeat. Kelly (3-0) won for the third time in as many Triple-A starts with 5 1/3 innings of six-hit, four-run ball. Former Aces reliever Keith Hessler worked the final two innings for his first save with El Paso.
Since being claimed off waivers by San Diego, Sanchez has five home runs in five games - all against the Aces.
The Aces and Chihuahuas continue their four-game series with game two on Friday at Southwest University Park. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. PT. Left-hander Anthony Banda (0-1, 10.80) gets the nod for Reno, while right-hander Carlos Pimentel (7-4, 6.39) will start for El Paso.
