Memphis Redbirds News Release
OMAHA, Nebraska - Randal Grichuk hit two home runs, and Mike Mayers gave up one run on five hits in seven innings of work to send the Memphis Redbirds to a 5-2 win over the Omaha Storm Chasers (Triple-A Royals) Thursday night in Omaha.
The Redbirds (38-41) have now won six-straight series openers. Grichuk's home runs were his third and fourth as a Redbird, and Jacob Wilson added another long ball for Memphis. Charlie Tilson was 2-for-5 with his 13th stolen base of the season, and Matt Williams drew a pair of walks and scored a run for the Redbirds.
The two-homer game was Grichuk's first since July 18, 2015 with the St. Louis Cardinals against the New York Mets.
Both teams were scoreless through three innings, before Grichuk's first homer of the night gave the Redbirds a 1-0 lead after three-and-a-half. The Redbirds hit two more long balls in the fifth, a pair of two-run shots by Wilson and Grichuk, and Memphis was up 5-0 after the top of the fifth.
Mayers was lifted after the seventh inning in his longest outing of the 2016 season. He had three perfect innings, and just two batters reached third base against him.
The Storm Chasers (32-46) plated single runs in the fifth and eighth innings, and freshly-minted Triple-A All-Star Sam Tuivailala earned his 13th save of the season in giving up one hit in the ninth.
Carlos Peguero threw out a potential third Omaha run at the plate to end the eighth inning.
The Redbirds and Storm Chasers play game two of their four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 (CT). Memphis starts a seven-game homestand on Monday, July 4, with a special holiday edition of postgame fireworks, presented by AutoZone. The game on the 4th of July also has three different food and ticket packages available.
