ABOUT TONIGHT'S MATCHUP:
Season Series: Nailers lead 4-3
Wheeling eliminated Toledo from postseason contention in a dramatic 5-4 victory Wednesday night at WesBanco Arena. Brandon DeFazio scored twice for the Nailers, including the game winning goal with 2:51 remaining in regulation. Toledo rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the loss. Toledo closed out their home schedule last night with a 6-2 win vs. Elmira.
The Nailers are fighting to secure the fourth seed in the conference, granting them home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The following are the possible scenarios heading into tonight's action:
Nailers can clinch the fourth seed with a win, or overtime/shootout loss tonight. Wheeling will then play the winner of tonights Florida/South Carolina contest in the first round.
If the Nailers lose in the regulation, they will earn the fifth seed in the conference, and play the winner of tonights Florida/South Carolina game.
Recent Transactions
Forward Brandon DeFazio has been loaned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League, while defenseman Kyle Bushee has been loaned to Manitoba of the AHL. The Nailers have signed forward Anthony Maiani. Maiani (pronounced, MEE-on-EE), has spent the past four seasons with the University of Denver. He posted 36 points (8g, 28a) in 41 games this season.
