Kane County Cougars News Release
CLINTON, Iowa - Leading 5-1 after seven innings, the Kane County Cougars suffered a heartbreaking 6-5 loss Friday night against the Clinton LumberKings at Alliant Energy Field. Scott Deal and Mickey Storey combined to yield five runs in the bottom of the eighth, leaving the Cougars with a split in the four-game series and a 6-4 mark on their 10-game road trip. They remain tied for first place atop the Western Division with Cedar Rapids.
Grant Desme doubled home Dusty Coleman in the first inning to give the Cougars a quick lead. Clinton tied the game in the second, but the Cougars answered three times in the fifth. Jason Christian, Coleman and Steve Kleen each drove in a run to make it 5-1.
The Cougars appeared headed toward a victory for starter Anthony Capra. The southpaw pitched six innings and gave up one run on two hits, walked five and fanned six. It was his second straight quality and the fifth in six games by a Cougar. Deal served up four straight hits in the eighth and hit a batter before Storey entered. The L'Kings managed a hit and a fielder's choice and took advantage of a Cougars error to storm ahead, 6-5. Then Cheyne Hann worked a perfect ninth for his first save.
After their long trip, the Cougars (33-21) return home to Elfstrom Stadium on Saturday night at 6 CDT with the start of a four-game series against the intrastate rival Peoria Chiefs (29-23). Shawn Haviland (4-1, 2.78) will oppose Aaron Shafer (4-2, 5.60).
