South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Dayton, OH - With an 8-4 win on Friday night, the Dayton Dragons won the series from the South Bend Silver Hawks by taking three of the four games at Fifth Third Field. The Silver Hawks have dropped two games under .500 for the first time since May 25th.
Dayton jumped on South Bend starter Sean Morgan (LP, 2-2) for three runs in the bottom of the first inning. All four Dragons hits in the first were singles, but they added up to three runs with Carlos Mendez picking up an RBI and Stephen Chapman driving in two to give the Dragons a 3-0 lead.
The Dragons added two more runs in the third against Morgan. Miguel Rojas singled to start the rally, moving to second on a walk, and scoring on a RBI single by Mendez. Chapman followed that up with another RBI single of his own, scoring Kyle Day for the 5-0 lead.
South Bend tried to start a comeback in the fifth against Dragons starter Curtis Partch (WP, 4-3). Isaias Asencio led off with a double, and scored one out later on Rossmel Perez's RBI single.
The Silver Hawks added another run against Partch in the sixth. Jake Elmore drew a walk to start the inning and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Alfredo Marte drove in Elmore with a double down the left field line, making it a 5-2 ballgame.
Dayton scored an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning against Daniel Vasquez (ND) on a sacrifice fly from Kevin Coddington.
South Bend drew within two in the eighth, when Alberto Diaz hit a two run home run against Steven Otterness (ND). It was Diaz's eighth homer of the year, and the Silver Hawks had some late life.
Any momentum South Bend gained on Diaz's homer was lost immediately, when Dayton put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the eighth against Bryan Woodall (ND). Day and Cody Puckett had RBI singles for Dayton, as they extended the lead to 8-4.
Scott Gaffney (SV, 2) recorded the final four outs for the Dragons to earn his second save of the season.
The Silver Hawks continue the road trip with two games at Fort Wayne over the weekend. First pitch against the TinCaps is scheduled for 7:05 PM Eastern Time on Saturday night. LHP Wade Miley (2-4, 4.13 ERA) toes the rubber for the Hawks, while the TinCaps counter with RHP Erik Davis (4-1, 3.38 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
