Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

It has been a whirlwind first half of the season for Charlie Cutler, and now the league's leading hitter is seeing stars.

The rosters for the 2009 Midwest League All-Star Game were announced by the league on Friday, and Cutler will represent the Quad Cities River Bandits as the starting catcher for the Western Division squad. The 22-year-old from San Francisco was the team's lone selection.

Cutler, a 14th-round pick out of the University of California-Berkeley last summer, has taken the Midwest League by storm in 2009, leading the league with a .381 batting average while checking in third with a .432 on-base percentage. The smooth-swinging lefty is also second on the River Bandits with 33 RBI, leads the club with 17 multi-hit games, and has swatted three homers and eight doubles while drawing nearly as many walks (15) as strikeouts (17). Cutler was recently named the St. Louis Cardinals Minor League Player of the Month for May, hitting safely in 22 of his 26 games last month while batting .410 and putting together a pair of seven-game hitting streaks.

While Cutler was the only River Bandits player to be named an All-Star, the host Clinton LumberKings led the way with eight selections. Twenty-year-old outfielder Denny Almonte highlights the LumberKings All-Stars that will take the field at Clinton's Alliant Energy Stadium on June 23. Pitchers Brett Lorin and Aaron Pribanic were also named to the squad.

Checking in behind Clinton were Kane County (West) and Great Lakes (East), each of which had seven selections that included four starting position players for their respective divisions. The Peoria Chiefs, this year's Western Division team that will be playing for the East to even the unbalanced divisional alignment, joined the West Michigan Whitecaps and Cedar Rapids Kernels with six selections each.

UP NEXT: The River Bandits conclude a 10-game road stretch with the finale of a four-game series in Burlington at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Quad Cities returns to Modern Woodmen Park on Saturday to kick off an eight-game homestand, the last of the first half. It starts with John Deere Night on a Rockin' Saturday that will feature a post-game concert by Superfly Samurai as well as ‘80's Night and a free CPR course! Ladies Night presented by Redken follows on a U.S. Bank Family Sunday, as the ladies will be taken care of with free massages and other female-oriented promotions while the kids will run the bases after the game and get player autographs. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Night will honor QCA Special Olympians in addition to a fantastic post-game fireworks display. Every Tuesday is an Economic Stimulus Tuesday with 2-for-1 tickets and free dinner for kids 12-and-under!
