Kane County Cougars News Release

PEORIA, IL - The Kane County Cougars used a seven-run fourth inning and a walk-free evening from three pitchers to fuel a 10-3 win Friday night against the Peoria Chiefs at O'Brien Field. The victory gives the Cougars an eighth consecutive win to start the season, bringing them two victories shy of tying the longest win streak in franchise history.

Each team scored once in the first inning, as Greg Dowling's sacrifice fly made it 1-0 right away and Cougars starter Travis Banwart yielded one tally in the bottom half. Then the Cougars broke open the contest against Alberto Cabrera (1-1) in the fourth. Jake Smith was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and left the game afterward under his own power. After Christian Vitters singled in a run and Walter Correa delivered a sacrifice fly, Corey Brown launched a long three-run homer for an 8-1 count.

Michael Lissman later drove in a run in the sixth with a single, and Todd Johnson hit his third homer of the season, a solo shot in the ninth, to account for the Cougars' final run.

Banwart (2-0) gave up two more runs before exiting after five innings. He allowed seven hits and struck out four. Scott Deal tossed three scoreless relief frames, and Jose Fragoso worked the ninth to close out the contest.

Game 2 of the three-game series is Saturday night at 6:30 CT. Jamie Richmond (1-0, 3.60) will pitch for the Cougars (8-0) against Zach Ashwood (0-0, 0.00) for the Chiefs (4-5).
