Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Quad Cities River Bandits faced two opponents on Friday at Modern Woodmen Park, battling a cold, rainy night and a howling wind to defeat the South Bend Silver Hawks, 5-1.

The first half of the contest was played in a light rain while 40-degree temperatures and a 30 mph wind whipping out to left field made every fly ball an adventure. Still, Quad Cities (4-4) was able to bounce back from an early deficit to hold South Bend (0-8) to just three hits and send the Silver Hawks to their eighth straight defeat to open the year.

Nick Additon (1-0) turned in another strong outing in his second start, holding South Bend to just two hits in five innings while striking out six. The only blemish on his line came in the third inning, when Aaron Hanke lifted a towering fly to left that got a boost from the wind and left the yard. Piggyback starter Brian Broderick (1) tossed the final four frames, striking out two and allowing just one hit for the save.

After Hanke's solo homer in the top of the third gave South Bend an early lead, the River Bandits immediately struck back in the bottom half of the frame. Mike Folli started the rally with a base hit up the middle. He moved to second when Adron Chambers reached on an error, and Pete Kozma followed with a single that loaded the bases. After Justin Roberson evened the score with an RBI groundout, Charlie Pelt checked in with the big hit of the inning, delivering a two-out, two-run single to put Quad Cities out in front by a 3-1 score.

Luis De La Cruz added a pair of run-scoring singles late in the game to complete the scoring. After Charlie Kingrey doubled in the fifth, De La Cruz singled him home on a sharp base hit up the middle for his first RBI of the year. Two innings later, the 18-year-old catcher drove a base hit to center that scored Matt Arburr for the decisive 5-1 lead.

The River Bandits dealt heralded prospect Jarrod Parker (0-1) the loss in his professional debut. The 19-year-old Parker, selected by the Diamondbacks with the ninth overall pick in the 2007 draft, was touched for five hits over 2.2 innings. He allowed three runs - none earned - while striking out three and walking none.
