
Chiefs Fall 10-3 to Kane County Friday Night

Peoria, IL -The Peoria Chiefs dropped game one of a three-game series with Kane County 10-3 on Friday night at O'Brien Field. The win drops the Chiefs to 4-5 on the season while Kane County improved to 8-0.
Peoria fell behind in the first inning with starter Alberto Cabrera on the mound. Matt Ray got things started with a one-out single to center followed by a Corey Brown double. With runners on second and third, Greg Dowling hit a sacrifice fly to score the first run and put Kane County in front 1-0.
Picking up where he left off the night before, Josh Donaldson got the Chiefs back to even in the bottom of the first against Travis Banwart. After Marwin Gonzalez lined a two-out single up the middle, Donaldson found the gap in left center that allowed Gonzalez to score all the way from first to make it 1-1.
Kane County got to Cabrera again in the fourth inning to blow the game wide open. Greg Dowling and Michael Lissman singled and a walk to Todd Johnson loaded the bases with no outs. A scary moment in the game came on the next batter when Cabrera hit Jake Smith in the head with a pitch to score a run to make it 2-1. Smith was down on his back for a few moments before he walked off the field and was replaced by pinch runner Shane Keough. Christian Vitters followed with an RBI single to center to extend the lead to 3-1. Walter Correa hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate another run and make it 4-1. After a strikeout, Matt Ray reached on an error by Jovan Rosa at first base that allowed a run to score and make it 5-1. Corey Brown added a three-run homer that ended the night for Cabrera with the score 8-1. The Cougars batted around in the inning.
Peoria started to chip away at the Kane County lead in the fourth inning. Donaldson hit the first pitch he saw off the wall in center for his second double of the game. Blake Lalli lined an opposite field double to left-field to score Donaldson and make it 8-2. The Chiefs were unable to get any closer as Banwart got out of the inning.
The Chiefs got closer in the fifth against Banwart. Cliff Andersen led off with a double to left and with one out scored on a single by Nate Samson to cut the lead to 8-3. With Samson on third, Donaldson bounced out to end the threat.
Cabrera took the loss in 3 2/3 innings of work allowing eight runs, four of which were earned on six hits. He struck out three and walked two in his first loss of the season. Hung-Wen Chen worked 2 1/3 innings and allowed one run on three hits and Blake Parker worked two scoreless innings and allowed one hit. Marcos Mateo gave up a solo home run in the ninth inning to Todd Johnson in his one inning of work.
Player of the Day - Josh Donaldson (C)- Donaldson continued to swing the hot bat for the Chiefs as he doubled twice in the game and went 2-for-3 in the game with one RBI. Going back to last night, Donaldson had three straight extra base hits.
Notes... The seven-run fourth inning was the most runs allowed in an inning by the Chiefs this season...The 2:42 minute game was the second longest game played this season by the Chiefs...Peoria has fallen behind in seven of nine games this season...Drew Rundle and Marquez Smith have started all nine games for the Chiefs...The Chiefs and Cougars continue the series on Saturday evening at 6:30...The first 1500 fans through the gates will receive a 2008-09 Peoria Chiefs Calendar...The Chiefs will send LH Zach Ashwood (0-1, 0.00) to the mound against RH Jamie Richmond (1-0, 3.60)....The game can be heard live beginning with the pre-game show at 6:15 PM online at www.peoriachiefs.com or on WOAM 1350.
