Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Cedar Rapids Kernels recorded their third consecutive shutout, 1-0, over the Lansing Lugnuts on a cold and rainy night at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

The game was played in a constant light rain, but that didn't seem to affect Kernels starter Jordan Walden (1-1), as he scattered two hits over six scoreless innings to pick up his first win of the season. Chris Chambers and Ryan Brasier combined to shut down Lansing for the final three innings, with Brasier picking up his third save of the season and his second in a row.

The Kernels scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as Clay Fuller scored on Godie Gronkowski's RBI single. Fuller was 2 for 2 on the night and Efren Navarro was 3 for 3. Jay Brossman had a single in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

Lansing starter Nate Starner (0-1) allowed a run on five hits and struck out six over six innings to take the loss.

The second game of this three game series with Lansing is Saturday afternoon at 2 pm. Gates open at 1 pm as it will be African American Day at the ballpark.

Tickets can be ordered on-line at www.kernels.com , or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560 after 10 am on Saturday.
