South Bend, IN â The Kane County Cougars came from behind to beat the South Bend Silver Hawks 12 â 11 Wednesday night at Coveleski Stadium. The Cougars were out hit 20 â 12 and committed four errors but outlasted the Hawks i9n the possible championship preview vs. the first half Eastern Division Champions.
The Cougars (82 â 52) would score first for the third straight game getting two runs in their first at bat. Vasili Spanos drilled a two run bases loaded single into center filed scoring Brian Ingram and Nick Rogers for a 2 â 0 lead.
South Bend (73 â 62) touched Cougar starter Jared Trout for a run in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead in half. The Cougars would put four more runs on the board in the top of the fourth as Dan Putnam and David Harriman both homered giving Kane County a 6 â 1 lead. The Hawks answered with three runs in the bottom of the third inning making it a 6 â 4 game.
Kane County would score again in the fourth when Spanos picked up his third RBI on the night with a sacrifice fly into center field scoring Rogers to make it 7 â 4. South Bend exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the inning sending 12 men to the plate chasing Trout en route to taking a 11 â 7 lead. The Cougars would score again in the top of the fifth when Ingram doubled home Harriman cutting the lead to three, then scored two more runs in the sixth making it a 11 â 10 game.
The Cougars took the lead in the top of the seventh when Eddie Kim slapped a two run double scoring Appert and Spanos making it a 12 â 11 game. Jason Windsor shut down the Hawks over the final 2.1 innings netting his second save and giving the win to Brigmer Leon.
The Cougars and the Silver Hawks will wrap up the four game set and their final regular season meeting on Thursday. Michael McGirr will get his third start of the season facing Garrett Mock in a 7:00 p.m. game.
