Yanks still rolling in Dayton

September 1, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

The month of September started out great for the Battle Creek Yankees. Nick Walsh led the way with five hits, becoming the 12th player in franchise history to reach that mark. The Yankees pounded out a season-high 19 hits on their way to defeating the Dayton Dragons 13-1 on the road in Midwest League action.

The Yankees scored runs for six straight innings, with one in each of the first four, three in the fifth, and six more in the sixth. A bunch of Yankees had phenomenal nights in the batter's box. Walsh was 5-5 with a run scored and a stolen base. Willie Vasquez banged out two home runs, scored twice, and had three RBI. Erold Andrus had a multi-hit game with two runs scored and an RBI. John Urick totaled two hits while adding two RBI. Enrique Cruz and Jason VanMeetren also had multi-hit games as the Yankees had six different players with multi-hit games.

Lost in all the hits was a great performance by T.J. Beam. Beam (2-5), recalled from Staten Island on Wednesday, made his first start for Battle Creek since May 6. He went 5.2 while allowing one run on four hits, walking two, and striking out six. Matt Brumit, Randy Vanderplow, and Mike Martinez pitched in relief to complete the victory.

The Yankees look for the sweep on Thursday at 7:05 EDT. The Yankees then return home on Friday to face the Dayton Dragons for the final four games of the regular season.
