September 1, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
A furious rally bid from the Swing of the Quad Cities came up just short on Wednesday night as the Swing were defeated, 8-6, by the Clinton LumberKings at Alliant Energy. The Swing scored three runs over the final two innings, but left the tying run at first when Scott Whitrock flied to deep center the end the game.
The LumberKings scored four runs against Julio DePaula to extend their lead to 8-3 after seven innings, but the Swing mounted an impressive comeback.
They plated two runs in the top of the eighth inning, when a Matt Moses single and a Kyle Phillips walk were followed by a run-scoring double from Whitrock, slicing Clinton's lead to 8-4. A bases-loaded bounceout from Alex Garcia brought home Phillips to slice Clinton's lead to 8-7.
In the ninth, the Swing got a one-out walk from JR Taylor and a single from Matt Moses before Brock Peterson reached on an error to score Taylor. With the tying run at first, Clinton brought on reliever Joel Kirsten, who struck out Kyle Geiger before Whitrock flied to deep center to close it out.
Lefty Errol Simonitsch picked up his second loss of the season for the Swing, getting charged with four runs on five hits in his three innings of work. The loss was Simonitsch's first since April 16, a stretch of 16 starts between losses. Tristan Crawford worked three scoreless innings in relief, while DePaula allowed four runs (three earned) in his inning. Peter Tautor worked a 1-2-3 eighth for Quad Cities.
With the game tied, 1-1, the Swing took the lead in the top of the third inning. Kyle Phillips, Scott Whitrock and Mark Zamojc singled to load the bases. With one away, Phillips came home on an Omar Burgos chopper, and Whitrock then scored on a passed ball for a 3-1 Swing lead.
But the LumberKings came back with three runs to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth frame. Larry Grayson doubled to opoen the inning, and Justin Hatcher drew a walk. Kevin Richardson followed with an RBI single to chase Swing starter Errol Simonitsch from the game. The LumberKings took the lead on a Dane Bubela single and an Antonio Pena sacrifice fly.
