Battle Creek Looking Like Bronx Bombers in 13-1 Rout of Dayton

September 1, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH – The Dayton Dragons (18-46, 45-89) took the field on Wednesday night looking to follow up a 13-2 blowout against the Battle Creek Yankees (36-29, 69-65) with a solid outing. Unfortunately, the playoff hopeful Yankees battled with an elevated level of intensity, routing the Miami Valley's team, 13-1 in front of 8,185 at Fifth Third Field.

The Yankees were able to plate single tallies in each of their first four innings off of Dragons starter Justin Mallett (L, 4-5) before blowing it open in the fifth. After Erold Andrus singled, John Urick drove him home with an RBI double to the right field wall; then with two outs, Willie Vasquez knocked a mammoth home run off the batters eye in center field for a solo shot. A three run inning extended the Battle Creek lead to 7-0 through four and a half innings of baseball.

In the sixth inning, the Yankees continued to roll against Dragons newcomer Phillip Ellison (ND). Three of the first four batters reached on Ellison, and after a pair of wild pitches allowed a run to score, Urick singled to right scoring another run; Following an RBI sacrifice fly by Matt Carson and a single by Jason Van Meetren, Vasquez hit his second homer on the night in as many at bats. The shot, a two run blast to right, extended the lead to 13-1. The Yankees batted around in the sixth, sending ten batters to the plate, scoring six runs on six hits.

In what has been a trend in the series, the Yankees starting pitchers were able to outmatch the Dragons hitters for the third straight night. T.J. Beam (W, 2-5) threw 5.2 innings of four hit baseball allowing just six Dragons base runners, only one of which came around to score. After exiting in the sixth inning, Matt Brummit (ND), Randy Vanderplow (ND), and Michael Martinez (ND) finished the Dragons off with 3.1 innings of three hit relief.

The Yankees have outscored the Dragons in the first three games of the series 34-8 and have out hit Dayton by a 50-29 margin. Battle Creek will go for the four game sweep Thursday, while the Dragons will try and put an end to a five game losing streak.

The Dragons will close out their final home series of the 2004 on Thursday night against the Battle Creek Yankees at Fifth Third Field. ESPN Radio 1410 Wing AM will carry the game live beginning with the pre game show at 6:30 pm; with the first pitch slated for 7:05 PM. Time Warner Television will televise the game live on channel 25, beginning at 7:00 PM. RHP Damian "Dirt" Ursin will get the start for Dayton, while the Yankees will counter with RHP Tyler Clippard.
