Lugnuts fall in shutout fashion in West Michigan
September 1, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Lansing Lugnuts News Release
COMSTOCK PARK- One night after dropping a 6-2 decision at the hands of their archrivals, the Lugnuts(73-62) were handcuffed once again as Danny Zell(4-4) shutout Lansing for six innings and two other hurlers combined to finish the job as the West Michigan Whitecaps(68-66, 39-26) shutout the Lugnuts 3-0 at Fifth Third Ballpark on Wednesday night.
The home team would get the only run it would need as it turned out in the bottom of the first on a two out single by Danilo Sanchez and a double by Kelly Hunt. The Whitecaps would get the lead up to 2-0 in the third on a triple by Juan Francia and a wild pitch by Carlos Marmol(14-9).
Lansing managed little offense all night, getting leadoff doubles by Chris Walker and Jake Fox in the sixth and seventh, but couldn't crack the scoreboard. Wilton Reynolds second homer of the year to lead off the fifth capped off the scoring.
Robinson Chirinos went 1-4 in his return from the disabled list while Weston O'Brien worked two scoreless innings behind Marmol to highlight and otherwise gloomy night for Lansing.
