Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, IN â Shortstop Juan Ciriaco was placed on the disabled list today and the San Diego Padres promoted infielder Sean Kazmar from the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League to the Fort Wayne Wizards, team officials announced.
Ciriaco, one of the six original members of the 2004 Wizards, finished the season hitting .241 with 29 runs scored, 12 doubles, a pair of triples and home runs and 35 runs batted in.
Kazmar was the Padres' fifth-round selection in this year's June Amateur Draft out of the Community College of Southern Nevada. He paced the Coyotes in 2003 with a .359 batting average (third best), 16 doubles (tied for team best) and 22 steals (second best), helping lead CCSN to the Junior College Baseball National Championship title. This season, Kazmar hit .330 with a team-best 61 hits, 14 doubles and 84 total bases.
Kazmar appeared in 65 games for the Emeralds and was batting .253 with 13 doubles (second), a team-leading three triple, six home runs and 27 runs batted in.
Kazmar becomes the sixth player drafted by the Padres in 2004 to appear with the Wizards, joining right-handers Michael Ekstrom, Vern Sterry Matt Varner, along with outfielders Chris Kolkhorst and Matt Thayer.
Also, outfielder Ruben Mora has been removed from the disabled list, effective immediately. He was originally placed on DL, retroactive to August 25. Mora has appeared in 23 games with the Wizards, including 21 in the outfield. He is currently hitting .284 with 12 runs scored, a pair of doubles, one home run and five runs batted in.
Because of injuries, right-hander Luke Steidlmayer, outfielder Jordan Pickens and Ciriaco have all been removed from the 2004 team roster.
