South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN â The Midwest League Championship Series is not until the middle of September, but if the South Bend Silver Hawks and Kane County Cougars are to meet in the final round of the 2004 playoffs, then fans of high scoring baseball should be aware. The teams combined for 23 runs, 32 hits and seven errors as the Cougars defeated the Silver Hawks in a slugfest 12-11.
The Silver Hawks trailed 7-4 heading to the bottom of the fourth inning and exploded to get back in the contest. Augie Murillo opened the inning when he reached fist base after first baseman Eddie Kim came off the bag too soon. Lino Garcia struck out for the first out, but the Hawks put a string of five straight hits together to tally five runs. After Allen Mottram was hit by a pitch, the Hawks put together two more consecutive hits and led after four innings 11-7. However, that was not enough for the Hawks.
The Cougars scored five runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to pull out the one run win.
