Geneva, IL â The Kane County Cougars ended the regular season with a thrilling come from behind 11 â 10 win over the Lansing Lugnuts Monday afternoon. Kory Wayment drove in four runs on the day and three in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Cougars gear up for the first round of the Midwest League playoffs that begin on Wednesday in Peoria.
The Lugnuts (77 â 63) would score in their first at bat for the fourth straight game when Chris Walker scored from third on an infield error to take the quick 1 â 0 lead. Lansing made it a 2 â 0 game in the second inning when Alberto Garcia cracked a solo home run, his seventh of the year, taking a 2 â 0 lead. The Cougars would answer with a run in the bottom of the inning when Kory Wayment hit a solo shot over the left-field wall, his ninth of the season, making it a 2 â 1 game. The Cougars (83 â 56) would tie the game in the bottom of the third when Brian Ingram led off he inning with a triple and scored on an infield ground out tying the score at 2 â 2. The Lugnuts would chase Cougars starting pitcher Jared Trout from the game scoring seven runs in the top of the fifth to take a 9 â 2 lead.
The Cougars would answer again getting four runs in their half of the frame highlighted by a two run double from David Harriman making it a 9 â 6 contest.
The Cougars would rally in the bottom of the eighth scoring six runs, four of which with two outs to take an 11 â 9 lead. Wayment had the big hit in the inning, coming through with a bases loaded, three run double to take the lead going into the top of the ninth. Justin Crowder and Jason Windsor combined to allow only one run but held on to break the Cougars four game losing streak. Michael McGirr picked up his first win of the year to improve to (1 â 3) while Jason Windsor picked up his 3rd save on the season.
The Cougars will take Tuesday off before heading to Peoria for game one of the best of three game division playoff series with the Chiefs. Cougar left-hander Trent Peterson will face Mike Parisi in the 6:00 p.m. game Wednesday night.
