Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
FOX CITIES STADIUM -- The Fort Wayne Wizards kept their season going while they ended the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers year with a 7-6 win Monday afternoon. Brian Wahlbrink drove in a pair of runs, including what turned out to be the game winner in the top of the eighth. Wisconsin ended the season on a seven game losing streak. The win clinched the second half Eastern Division Wild Card for the Wizards.
Fort Wayne (72-68 overall, 39-31 second half) scored a run in the first inning. George Kottaras singled with two out and scored all the way from first on a dropped fly ball off the bat of Fernando Valenzuela.
The Rattlers (57-82, 26-44) answered with three runs in the bottom of the first. Josh Womack singled, stole second, and went to third on an infield grounder. Adam Jones drove in Womack with a single to tie the game. A couple of wild pitches and a walk to Bryan LaHair put runners on first and third with two out. Jeremy Dutton sent a grounder back to the mound off Wizard starter Mike Ekstrom. The ball deflected back towards home plate. Ekstrom fielded the ball, but threw wildly to first and two runs scored.
Sean Kazmar singled in a run in the top of the third to get Fort Wayne to within 3-2. Drew Macias singled to start the fourth and Luke Carlin tripled him home to tie the game. Skip Adams knocked in Carlin with a single for a 4-3 lead. Later in the inning, Wahlbrink drove in Adams with a sacrifice fly. Kottaras homered deep to right for a 6-3 advantage.
But, the Rattlers fought back to tie the game on a two run single by Mike Nesbit in the bottom of the sixth.
Adams started the top of the eighth with a double. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Wahlbrink.
Both Womack and Nick Orlandos singled with two out in the ninth inning against Fort Wayne closer Leo Rosales. Jones sent a ground ball for left field but shortstop Kazmar made a diving stop to keep the ball on the infield. Womack rounded third too far and got caught in a rundown. Orlandos wound up getting tagged for the final out of the season.
