Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA - The Burlington Bees (34-36, 56-84) finished off the 2004 season with a 5-3 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks (35-35, 78-62) at Community Field this afternoon. The win saved the Bees from being swept in the season series after the Silver Hawks had won the first seven head-to-head meetings this year.

The Bees were led by Chris Lubanski who had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in four. Lubanski got the Bees on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the first. The Silver Hawks came back and tied the game in the third and took a 2-1 lead on a solo homer by Edgar Varela in the fourth. Cole Hilt's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth got the Bees back to even at 2-2. Hilt finished the season with a season-high five-game hitting streak.

The Silver Hawks took the lead back in the top of the fifth on a solo homer by Chris Carter, his second of the series. Alan Moye led off the bottom of the fifth with his second single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Johnson, and scored on Lubanski's first double to tie the game at three.

Bees' starter Greg Atencio tied the franchise record by making his 28th start of the season today. He left after the fifth inning, and did not get a decision. RH Rusty Begnaud (1-0) made his Bees' debut and pitched three scoreless innings in relief. The Bees made him the winning pitcher by scoring the winning runs in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Lubanski laced his second double down the right field line to drive in Jeff Barry and Moye and gave the Bees a 5-3 lead. The hit knocked out Silver Hawks starter Chris Kinsey (8-11) who suffered the loss.

Gabe DeHoyos gave up a leadoff single in the top of the ninth, but got the next man to hit into a double play. After a double by Tila Reynolds, DeHoyos got Jon Kaplan to bounce out to second for the final out and earn his fifth save. That ties him with Dusty Dossett and Steve Bray for the team lead this year.

The Bees welcomed a crowd of 1,282 to the ballpark today to push the season total to 62,691. That is the highest attendance total since the team's Midwest League Championship season of 1999. The Bees would like to thank all the fans who attended games this year, all of our sponsors, and all of those who support Bees baseball in their own way for an outstanding season and look forward to the start of 2005 in the newly renovated Community Field.
