September 6, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Clinton LumberKings broke 1-1 tie with a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning and the Swing couldn't find their offensive rhythm late as the Swing were defeated, 2-1, at John O'Donnell Stadium in the 2004 regular season finale Monday afternoon. A crowd of 3,003 came out to support the Swing on Fan Appreciation Day at John O'Donnell Stadium, bringing the Swing's 2004 season attendance at the renovated stadium to 173,370.
The Swing of the Quad Cities finish the 2004 season with a 68-68 overall record. The Swing finished the first half with a 33-33 record, and have closed out the second half with a 35-35 mark. The Swing pitching staff finished the season with 1,123 strikeouts, the second-highest single-season total in Quad Cities Midwest League baseball history.
Clinton infielder Casey Benjamin played all nine positions for the Clinton LumberKings, starting the game in right field and finishing at first base. He was involved in a rundown on an inning-ending double play in the bottom of the fourth frame, and retired the only man he faced on the mound in the top of the eighth. When Benjamin caught in the bottom of the seventh inning, Clinton pitcher Joldy Watts struck out the side.
The Swing jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Kyle Geiger drew a leadoff walk. After a single from Kyle Phillips, Mark Zamojc singled to bring home the game's first run.
But the LumberKings tied it up in the top of the sixth inning. With two away, Josh Kreuzer doubled into left field, and Justin Hatcher followed with a single to left to even the score, 1-1.
Clinton turned a leadoff double into a run in the top of the eighth inning, as Abigail Sandoval scored on Kreuzer's sacrifice fly.
Swing lefthander Errol Simnitsch got no decision despite a tremendous outing for the Swing. The 22-year-old allowed only four hits in hits 5.2 innings of work, and closes the season 6-2 with a 2.56 ERA.
Angel Garcia allowed one run in 1.1 innings, while Peter Tautor picked up the loss after allowing one run in two frames of work.
