Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Scott Tyler, Julio DePaula and Jay Sawatski combined on a three-hit shutout as the Swing of the Quad Cities defeated the Clinton LumberKings, 3-0, on Sunday night at John O'Donnell Stadium. A crowd of 4,440 on hand for the final fireworks show of the season watched as the Swing won for the tenth time in their last 13 home games despite having been eliminated from playoff contention earlier in the day.
The Peoria Chiefs defeated the Beloit Snappers on Sunday afternoon at Beloit, and are now one full game ahead of the Swing in the wild card race. Because the Chiefs won the season series, 9-7, from the Swing, Peoria will advance to the postseason.
The Swing pitching staff continued its yearlong dominance on Sunday, as Tyler allowed the only three hits of the game. The Swing righty struck out five men while walking only three, and finishes the 2004 season 7-4 with a 2.60 ERA. The LumberKings loaded the bases on Tyler with nobody out in the second inning, but Tyler got a strikeout and two popouts to escape without a problem.
DePaula and Sawatski combined three perfect innings. DePaula struck out the side in the seventh inning, and threw only five pitches while getting three straight groundouts in the eighth. Sawatski worked the ninth frame to pick up his fifth save of the season, coaxing a popout from Emerson Frostad to end it.
The Swing scored the game's only runs in the first inning, scoring three times against Emilio Adames, who was making his Midwest League debut. Denard Span led off with a single into right, and JR Taylor hooked a double into the right field corner, scoring Span all the way from first. Brock Peterson's single into center plated Taylor and, after a Scott Whitrock infield single, Peterson came home on a wild pitch,
