'Caps Second Half Champs . . . Meet Lugnuts in Playoffs

The West Michigan Whitecaps are ready for the playoffs in more ways than one. The Whitecaps finally know whom they will meet in the first round of the Midwest League playoffs – the Lansing Lugnuts. And the ‘Caps tuned-up for the post-season in style with a solid 9-2 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in Iowa on Labor Day. The victory gives the Whitecaps the second half Eastern Division crown with a 40-30 record.

The ‘Caps secured the regular season finale' with three-run rallies in second, fourth and sixth innings for a 9-1 lead. Kelly Hunt's franchise record 21st home run of the season highlighted the first rally and a pair of doubles by Danilo Sanchez paced the other two uprisings.

West Michigan starter Danny Zell allowed just one run in five innings on the mound to notch his fifth victory of the season.

The Whitecaps will now get a day off to prepare for the playoffs that will begin Wednesday night at Fifth Third Ballpark against the Lugnuts in a best two-out-three series. The remaining game(s) of the series will be played in Lansing starting on Thursday.

Note: Playoff tickets are on sale at Fifth Third Ballpark on Tuesday from 10 AM- 6 PM.
