Yankees end season with extra-inning loss

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - Battle Creek dropped a heartbreaking extra-inning game 7-4 to the Dayton Dragons Monday afternoon at C.O. Brown Stadium. The loss ends the Yankees¹ run for the final playoff spot. The Yankees needed a win plus a Fort Wayne loss to qualify, but the Wizards held off Wisconsin 7-6 to secure the wild-card for the Eastern Division.

The Yankees took an early 1-0 lead. Matt Carson had an RBI single, but with the bases loaded and only one out the Yankees were unable to score any more runs.

Dayton took a 3-1 lead in the fifth, scoring three runs on four hits. The Yankees got to within one with a single run in the fifth. John Urick doubled home Hector Made to make it 3-2. The Yankees tied the game in the eighth. Rafael Rodriguez had an RBI double, but was thrown out trying to reach third base.

Neither team scored in the ninth or 10th innings. In the 11th Dayton plated four runs on five hits. The Yankees were able to score one run in the bottom half, but it wasn¹t enough. The loss snaps Battle Creek¹s string of seven consecutive playoff appearances. Fort Wayne and West Michigan will join South Bend and Lansing in the Eastern Division playoffs. The Yankees end the second half with a 38-32 record and an overall record of 71-68.
