Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL â The Kane County Cougars offensive woes continued Saturday night in a 5 â 1 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts at Elfstrom Stadium. Lansing used a combination of three relievers to hold the Cougars scoreless over the final eight innings and set up the possibility to be the only team to sweep the Cougars in a four games series.
The Lugnuts (77 â 62) scored in their first at bat for the third straight game when Chris Walker scored from third base on a bases loaded ground out taking the quick 1 â 0 lead.
The Cougars (82 â 56 ) would answer as Brian Ingram scored from third base on a ground out from David Castillo to tie things up at 1 â 1. Lansing would reclaim the lead in the top of the second after getting two singles, Robinson Chirinos scored from third base on another ground out taking a 2 â 1 lead. Cougars starting pitcher Chris Dunwell was touched for three more runs in the top of the fifth inning highlighted by a two run double from Drew Larsen to take a 5 â 1 lead.
Dunwell was pulled after six innings of work allowing all five runs on eight hits with four strikeouts as Dan Fyvie came in to pitch the seventh. Fyvie would retire the Nuts in order in the seventh inning and kept them scoreless in the eighth while Jose Corchado did the same in the ninth.
The Cougars would out hit the Lugnuts 10 â 9 but could not come through with the timely hit being shutout over the final eight innings losing the game by the final score of 5 - 1. Dunwell took the loss to fall to (11 â 8) while Kris Gross picked up the win to improve to (2 â 0). The loss is the Cougars fourth straight and equals the season high losing streak that has happen just two other times this year.
The Cougars and the Lugnuts wrap up the series Monday afternoon in a 2:00 p.m. game. Jared Trout will take the mound for Kane County, trying to repeat his complete game shutout performance that he achieved over Lansing back in June, while the Lugnuts look for the series sweep.
