Evansville Otters News Release

(NORMAL, IL) --- The Normal CornBelters scored an eighth inning run and held on in the ninth for a slim 2-1 win against the Evansville Otters on Wednesday night.

Normal's starter Tyler Lavigne and Evansville's right-hander Bryce Morrow kept the game scoreless until the bottom of the third inning. After rookie Ty Wiesemeier led off with a double, fellow outfielder Alvaro Ramirez chopped a ground ball up the middle that pushed the CornBelters ahead 1-0.

Evansville came close to tying the game in the top of the fourth. After a leadoff walk, Frank Martinez stole second, then nearly scored on a ground ball to third and subsequent fielding error on the throw at first base. Martinez raced around third on the play, only to be tagged out at the plate for the final out of the inning.

Down 1-0, Evansville rallied again in the top of the seventh inning. First baseman Nick Schwaner led off with a double and came around to score the tying run on a fielding error from third baseman Chico Gomez.

The game remained a 1-1 tie until the bottom of the eighth inning. Reliever Patrick Crider entered the game, marking his 96th appearance as an Evansville Otter, setting the franchise record for most games pitched. Wiesemeier, however, led off with another double and scored a few batters later on a double play groundout.

Evansville would get a two-out single in the ninth but closer Marshall Schuler secured the win with a flyout to center field.

Normal earns the sweep with the 2-1 victory. The CornBelters are now 8-14 this season. The loss drops the Evansville Otters to 8-16.

Both starters did not factor in to the decision. Tyler Lavigne allowed one unearned run in 6.1 innings, as Bryce Morrow gave up just a single run over seven innings.

Joe Joseph (1-0) is the winning pitcher, tossing 1.1 hitless innings for the CornBelters. Patrick Crider (0-1) takes the loss for Evansville after allowing the go-ahead run in 0.2 innings. The save is the first this season for Marshall Schuler.

Luis Uribe had three hits in the game for the Evansville Otters, his second game back with the team after re-signing on Tuesday.

Evansville will return home tonight and start a six-game homestand against the London Rippers on Thursday evening. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. CDT on FC Tucker Emge Realty night. Bosse Field will again host Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark with $1 draft beer. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling the Evansville Otters Box Office at (812) 435-8686.
