Miners Avoid Sweep with Win over Beach Bums

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners avoided a sweep with a 5-3 win over the Traverse City Beach Bums. With the win, the Miners and Beach Bums are tied for first place in the Eastern Division with a 15-9 record. Miners starter Shawn Gilblair earned his third win of the season with a stellar pitching performance. Through six innings, Gilblair gave up four hits, three earned runs, walked two and struck out 10 batters.

The Miners scored first as catcher Elliot Hagburg hit a two RBI single in the bottom of the second inning off Beach Bums starter Reid Kelly, who made his first start off the disabled list, to give the Miners a 2-0 lead. The Beach Bums scored one run in the top of the third inning off Gilblair with a solo homerun by catcher Marcus Nidiffer. The Beach Bums then tied it in the top of the fourth with another solo home run, this time by first baseman Chase Burch to tie it up at two.

The Miners re-took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI groundout by outfielder Sean Harrell who was activated off the disabled list before the game, to give the Miners a 3-2 lead. Elliot Hagburg then hit a sacrifice fly to extend the Miners lead 4-2.

The Beach Bums scored another run in the top of the sixth to make it 4-3 as catcher Marcus Nidiffer hit his second homerun of the game. Reid Kelly left the game after seven innings, as he allowed five runs, four earned and struck out seven. The Miners scored another run in the bottom of the seventh to take a 5-3 lead. Max Peterson closed the game in the top of the ninth by striking out the side to give the Miners the win.

Beach Bums reliever Sam Brown threw 2/3 of the eighth, walking two batters. Nick Capito threw 1/3 of the eighth and struck out one batter. Miners reliever Ryan Quigley threw two innings, allowed one walk and struck out three batters. Shawn Gilblair earned the win (3-1), Reid Kelly with the loss (3-1) and Max Peterson with his eighth save of the season.

The Miners head to Windy City for a three game set beginning tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Tune in to Michael Ventola on the Miners Radio Network for the Heartland Regional Center Pregame Show beginning at 6:45 pm.
