Normal CornBelters News Release

Normal, IL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, broke out the brooms for the first time this season by completing the sweep of the Evansville Otters with a 2-1 victory Wednesday night at the Corn Crib.

The 'Belters improved to 8-14 on the season, having won four out of their last five games, and close to within six games of first place in the Frontier League's Western Division. Normal starting pitcher Tyler Lavigne went 6 2/3 innings, surrendering only three hits and no earned runs. Reliever Josh Joseph (1-0) picked up the win, while closer Marshall Schuler added his first save of the season.

Despite Lavigne's superb performance on the mound, 'Belter centerfielder Tyler Wiesemeyer may have stolen player of the game honors. In his first at bat as a CornBelter, the former Illinois State University star doubled to left and later scored on an RBI single by left fielder Alvaro Ramirez in the bottom of the 3rd.

Lavigne would hold the Otters scoreless until a 'Belter error in the top of the 7th allowed Evansville to tie the score at one run apiece.

Normal would respond, as Wiesemeyer again doubled to lead off the bottom of the 8th before coming home to score on a groundout by second baseman Pat McKenna.

The 'Belters will continue the home stand Thursday evening as they play host to the Gateway Grizzlies. LHP Jacob Liedka (1-1, 3.00 ERA) will take the ball for Normal, while RHP Pat Arnold (1-0, 1.29 ERA) goes for Gateway.
