Washington Wild Things News Release

AVON, Ohio - Chris Smith pitched six innings of two-run ball, but a five-run seventh inning doomed the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial in a 7-2 loss to the Lake Erie Crushers on Wednesday night.

Smith recorded a career-high nine strikeouts in his second career start against his former club, going six innings, allowing two runs (one earned), on six hits, but it was a flurry of runs in the seventh that ultimately did in the Wild Things.

Smith had a streak of 13 scoreless innings, after a complete-game shutout in his last outing, before Wally Correa crossed the plate in the fifth to end the scoreless run.

Washington set the table early with a trio of singles to start off the first. Michael Bando followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Doug Thennis from third to make it 1-0.

The Wild Things would use a similar approach in the fifth, stringing together three consecutive hits again as Robbie Garvey extended their lead to 2-0 with a single to right field.

Errors in the bottom of the fifth allowed Lake Erie to get on the board, effectively ending Smith's streak and tying the game at two.

Robby Kuzdale first drove in Wally Correa on an infield single, and then Andrew Davis followed with a double to left field that scored Kuzdale.

After tying things up in the fifth, the Crushers took command in the seventh, after two walks, an error, a passed ball, three wild pitches that helped the Crushers score their five runs.

First, Andrew Davis singled in Adrian Ortiz to give the Crushers their first lead of the game. One batter later Lake Erie made it 4-2 on an infield error that allowed Robby Kuzdale to score.

Two batters later Rogelio Noris singled to center to score Davis to make it 5-2.

A wild pitch made it 6-2 and Decker followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-2 in an inning where eight Crushers came to the plate.

Casey Barnes will take the hill for the Wild Things as the road trip continues in Florence Thursday night. Coverage begins at 6:55 on the Wild Things flagship station WJPA or online at www.msasports.net. The team returns home on Wednesday, June 20th, for a six-game homestand.
