Normal CornBelters News Release

O'FALLON, Mo. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, gave up a run in the eighth inning and lost a back-and-forth game 4-3 to the River City Rascals on Monday afternoon at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.

The CornBelters drew first blood in the fourth inning when Pat McKenna doubled with one out, went to third on a ground out and scored on a Pat Trettel single through the left side of the infield.

The Rascals quickly took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Jeremy Synan drew a leadoff walk followed by a home run from Josh Workman hit over the short wall at the 325-foot mark in right center to put River City ahead 2-1.

The Belters took advantage of some Rascal misplays to take a one-run lead in the fifth. Matt Mirabal singled with one out and scored from first when the play on a bunt single by Alvaro Ramirez was thrown into right field. Ramirez went to third on the play and scored on another Rascal error to give Normal a 3-2 lead.

River City tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh when Curran Redal led off with a single and stole second, then scored on a base hit to shallow center by Doug Sanders.

The Rascals took the lead in the eighth off Normal reliever Brendon Smith with a leadoff double by Charlie Lisk and an RBI single from Jason Patton.

Dustin Umberger (4-2) pitched the final two innings for the win while Smith (0-2) was saddled with the loss.

The CornBelters return home for a brief three-game homestand against the Schaumburg Boomers on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 6:30 each evening.
