
Miners Bats Continue Strong with Win over Grizzlies

Sauget, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners defeated the Gateway Grizzlies 7-3. Miners starter Darrin Tew pitched well as he went five innings and allowed three runs. He gave up five hits and struck out three batters. The Miners win the series over the Grizzlies.
The Miners two nights in a row got the bats going early as Carlos Mendez hit a sacrifice fly off Grizzlies starter Pat Arnold to give the Miners a 1-0 lead. will Block grounded into a fielder's choice with runners on first and third to bring in another run to give the Miners a 2-0 lead. The Grizzlies scored a run in the bottom of the third with a solo home run by Jon Myers to put the Grizzlies within one to make it a 2-1 game.
The Miners scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning as Sean Harrell hit a lead off home run in the inning off Pat Arnold to give the Miners a 3-1 lead. Chad Maddox with two outs hit a three run home run off Arnold to give the Miners 6-1 lead. Arnold would only go four innings for the Grizzlies. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Rogelio Norris for Gateway hit a solo home run off Tew to bring the Grizzlies within four 6-2. The Miners scored a run in the top of the fifth inning when Cannon Lester hit a base hit to bring in a run 7-2. Tew gave up another solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, a second one from Jon Myers to make it 7-3.
Ross Davis and Ryan Quigley eached tossed a scoreless inning for the Miners. Albert Ayala threw two innings to secure the win for the Miners as they would win 7-3. With the win, the Miners improve to 21-14 on the season. Darrin Tew earned his second victory (2-0) of the season.
The Miners and Grizzlies will wrap up the three game series tomorrow as the Miners will send LHP Brian Fowler (3-1) to the mound. He'll be opposed by RHP Chris Enourato. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
