Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Chase Burch became the Traverse City Beach Bums all-time career hits leader as the Beach Bums finished off a sweep of the London Rippers with a 4-1 win.
The historic hit also played a big part in the TC victory as Burch came to the plate with Ryan Still on third, Jose Vargas on first and two out. On a 1-1 offering from Matt Schimpf, Burch bounced a single back through the middle for hit number 218 in his Beach Bums career, breaking Steve Young's mark. The hit also scored Still to give Traverse City a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
Two innings later, Burch found himself in a similar situation as Still was on second and Vargas on first with one out. The slugger lined a ball into center to score Still again and push the lead to 2-0. Traverse City would add another run in the sixth as Sean Gusrang led off the inning with a double. After a Travis Higgs groundout moved Gusrang to third, Kyle Eveland executed a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to bring home Gusrang for a three-run Traverse City cushion.
The two teams traded runs in the seventh as London scored on a passed ball that plated Jim Vahalik while the Beach Bums tallied one in the bottom of the inning on a Kyle Colligan double to score Vargas.
The win went to Brooks Belter (4-0) who pitched six shutout innings on the evening, not walking a batter and striking out five. Scott Mueller tossed a scoreless ninth for the second consecutive night to earn his ninth save of the year. Schimpf (2-2) took the loss for the Rippers.
The Beach Bums now have Tuesday off before taking on the Washington Wild Things on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. It is a Weenie Wednesday at Wuerfel Park where fans will receive a dollar off all hot dogs, Johnsonville brats and the half pound Hawg Dog. Jacob Clem (2-3, 2.21) will start for Traverse City against Chris Smith (2-2, 2.46) for Washington.
