Miners Drop Final Game in Gateway

Sauget, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners lose to the Gateway Grizzlies 6-1, but win the series two games to one. Miners starter Brian Fowler lasted five innings as he gave up four runs off four hits and struck out four.

Chad Maddox gave the Miners the early lead off Grizzlies starter Chris Enourato, as he hit a solo homerun in the top of the fourth inning to give the Miners a 1-0 lead. For Maddox, that was his fifth home run of the season and his 40th RBI. That was the only run of the game for the Miners.

The Grizzlies scored four runs (two earned) in the bottom of the sixth inning off Miners starter Brian Fowler. Fowler left with the bases loaded, after giving up two runs. Gabriel Shaw came in without an out recorded and gave up a sacrifice fly by Grizzlies first baseman Alex Guthrie. A run also scored from third base via an error by Jason Ganek to cap the inning at 4-1 in favor of the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning when Grizzlies right fielder Aaron Conway hit a two run home run off Gabriel Shaw to give the Grizzlies a 6-1 lead.

Max Peterson pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Miners. Peterson gave up one hit and struck out one batter.

With the loss, the Miners fall to 21-15 and tied for second place with the Florence Freedom. The Miners are off tomorrow and resume play on Wednesday in Joliet, as they begin a three game series with the Slammers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
