Worcester Red Sox News Release
WORCESTER, M.A. - Another late rally by the Worcester Red Sox (11-10) fell just short against the Buffalo Bisons (12-9), a 5-4 loss on a chilly Thursday night at Polar Park.
Four batters in to the game, Buffalo loaded the bases against WooSox starter Thomas Pannone. Cullen Large came to the plate and grounded a ball to the right side for an RBI groundout, putting the road team on top 1-0. Worcester answered right back in the bottom of the frame, as Franchy Cordero ripped an RBI double down the right field line to make it 1-1.
The Bisons regained the lead in the top of the second against Pannone, thanks to Dexter Fowler. The 2016 World Series champion, in his season debut for the Toronto organization, smacked a go-ahead two-run single to right. Fowler would finish the day with two hits and three RBI in his first action since tearing his ACL with the Angels last April.
But Pannone bared down from there, finishing the day with five innings of three-run ball and five strikeouts.
After Buffalo got two in the sixth on a throwing error with Eduard Bazardo on the mound, the WooSox again found themselves on the comeback trail. Ronaldo Hernandez, who committed the error in the top of the inning, made amends with a two-out, two-strike, two-run single. An inning later, after a Jeter Downs triple, Cordero brought Downs home with a groundout, notching his league-leading 23rd RBI.
That made it a 5-4 game-Worcester put the tying run on second in the ninth, but Bisons' reliever Matt Gage struck out Cordero to end the night, giving the WooSox a 1-2 start to the series.
In relief following Bazardo, Durbin Feltman and Derek Holland combined for three innings of scoreless ball. The pair combined to strike out five and did not allow a baserunner.
The WooSox continue the six-game series versus the Buffalo Bisons on Friday at Polar Park. On the mound, Josh Winckowski is the scheduled starter for Worcester. Radio coverage is live at 6:25 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network, while television coverage is on NESN+.
