Buffalo Bisons News Release

WORCESTER, MA - Hours after their parent clubs concluded their four-game series, the Buffalo Bisons and Worcester Red Sox met for the third game of six Thursday night at Polar Park, where the Bisons hung on for the 5-4 win.

Leading off for the Bisons was long time veteran outfielder Dexter Fowler, who had been ramping up in Florida after signing a minor league deal with the Blue Jays on March 31. Fowler, who won a World Series with the Cubs in 2016, tore his left ACL while playing for the Angels last April and subsequently missed the rest of the 2021 season. The switch-hitting Fowler wasted no time with his new club, going 3-4 with three RBIs in his Bison debut.

Fowler singled and scored off Thomas Pannone in the first and then drove in two with another single in the second. Mallex Smith and Logan Warmoth ran all over WooSox backstop Ronaldo Hernandez, swiping three and two bags respectively, including a pair of double steals. Smith was able to take an extra base twice thanks to errant throws, one of which led to a run.

After consecutive tough outings, Nick Allgeyer bounced back nicely and threw five innings of one-run baseball, allowing just three hits and striking out six. The WooSox would immediately take advantage of his successor, Graham Spraker, in the sixth, plating two after Spraker allowed two hits and three walks in the inning. He did get some help from Gabriel Moreno who continues to impress defensively, this time throwing out Yolmer Sánchez.

Jeter Downs came around to score after a leadoff triple in the seventh to cut the Bison lead to one, but, facing the top of the WooSox order, Matt Gage struck out the side to close out the win.

The Bisons and WooSox will meet again tomorrow night with first pitch set for 6:45 p.m. EST. Shaun Anderson will face off against Josh Winckowski, the Red Sox 14th ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline. Winckowski was initially drafted by the Blue Jays in 2016 and was in the system through 2020, before being included in a trade to the Mets for Steven Matz. He was then involved in a three-way deal between the Mets, Red Sox, and Royals that was headlined by Andrew Benintendi going to Kansas City.

The Bisons will also be getting a major boost with the activation of Blue Jays No. 3 prospect Jordan Groshans, who is expected to make his Triple-A and season debut tomorrow after starting the year rehabbing an injury in Florida. Groshans spent last season with Double-A New Hampshire, where he slashed .291/.367/.450 in 75 games.
