March 16, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors, ECHL affiliate of the Minnesota Wild, announced today they have signed LW Mike Gurtler to a standard player contract.
Gurtler, 23, just completed a four-year career with Mercyhurst College of the NCAA. He appeared in 138 games with the Lakers, scoring 44 goals and adding 54 assists for 98 points. His most productive season was in 2009-10, when he had 30 points (14g-16a) in 33 games. That season, he became one of just seven players in NCAA history to record three shorthanded goals in the same game. Mercyhurst saw their season come to a close last Saturday, after falling to the University of Connecticut in overtime during the Atlantic Hockey Association Quarterfinals.
The Rochester, N.Y. native played four years in the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League (OPJHL), three of which were spent with the Georgetown Raiders. In his OPJHL career, he knocked home 41 goals and 59 assists for 100 points in 134 games. The 6-2, 222 pound forward also played one season with the Indiana Ice of the USHL (United States Hockey League), where he had 11 points (7g-4a) in 29 games.
What Marty says:
"Mike is a big power forward who will fit right in to our team. He has good skills, and is very good defensively. He will also help our penalty kill."
Upcoming Schedule:
After earning a three game sweep over the Idaho Steelheads last weekend, the Condors continue their home stand tonight against the Alaska Aces. Fans who have a High School or College ID can get in for just $1, courtesy of 92.5 La Campesina. Fans can also donate unopened school supplies or two new or gently used books to assist Olive Knolls Christian Schools following a recent fire, and receive $1 admission, sponsored by Wells Fargo.
The week's games continue as the Ontario come to town on Friday and Saturday. The first 2,000 fans age 17 and under will receive Condors Skateboard Decks on Friday, courtesy of ABC23 and 106.1 KRAB Radio.
On Saturday, the Condors Fighting Cancer Hockey-thon concludes after over 24 hours of hockey, sponsored by 29 Eyewitness News and KUZZ 107.9. Visit http://bakersfieldcondors.com/web/category/schedule/ wsO] for more information and the Condors promotional schedule.
