Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Bakersfield, CA - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, won a third period battle with the Condors, but couldn't recover from the deficit to lose 6-4.

The crowd of 7,093 at Rabobank Arena witnessed three straight powerplay goals in the first period. Victoria struck first at 3:12 into the period as Ryan Wade from the point passed down low to Mike Stutzel behind the net, and Stutzel spotted Wes Goldie on the doorstep the 1-0 lead.

Bakersfield answered on their first powerplay of the game, as in a 4-on-3 advantage Defenseman Steve Rodberg found Kevin St. Jacques in the left circle to score his tenth goal of the season.

With 2:25 remaining in the first, St. Jacques won a powerplay faceoff in the Salmon Kings zone and fed to Defenseman Tyler Scott at the right point, and Scott fired a shot for his sixth goal of the season and the 2-1 lead. The Condors added another goal before the end of the opening frame. With 59 seconds remaining, a slapshot from the right circle by Rane Carnegie deflected off a Salmon Kings stick and past Netminder Bryan Bridges.

The Condors continued their goal streak in the second period as Steve Rodberg beat Bridges from the point for a 4-1 Bakersfield lead, and Josh Liebenow dug the puck from the corner and found a wide open St. Jacques in the left circle for his second goal of the game and the 5-1 gap.

Victoria's Kiel McLeod earned his 14th goal of the season with 2:50 left in the middle frame. Milan Gajic led McLeod up the ice, and McLeod used a Bakersfield defender for the screen and roofed a shot on Goaltender Danny Taylor from the centre slot.

The Salmon Kings won the third period in goals and shots, while trying to climb back from the 5-2 deficit. Vancouver Canucks contracted player Marc-Andre Bernier scored his first goal with the Salmon Kings, tipping in a deep pass from Darryl Lloyd during a Victoria powerplay.

The Condors regained their three-goal advantage on the powerplay as St. Jacques stole the puck in the Victoria zone and spotted Brett Lutes who backhanded a shot past a sprawling Bridges.

Victoria closed the gap again as McLeod carried the puck out from behind the Salmon Kings net, glided into the Condors zone and left the puck for Gajic, who snapped it top corner for his 11th goal of the season. Bakersfield settled into the nest for the final four minutes to capture their second win on Victoria this season.

Final: 6-4 Condors

Taylor earned his fourth win of the season and Bridges suffered his eighth loss. Victoria went 2 for 9 on the powerplay and Bakersfield was 2 for 8 with the man advantage. The Condors outshot the Salmon Kings 44-32. Victoria (12-20-0-1) return to Fresno (20-9-2-0) for a 5:00 p.m. game tomorrow at the Save Mart Center.
