Dayton Bombers News Release

Wheeling, WV- The Dayton Bombers were trailing by one entering the third period, but found a way to tie the game and force overtime and a shootout before falling to the Wheeling Nailers 5-4 in a shootout at WesBanco Arena on Friday night.

Dayton jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on the road, as Mike Berry scored his team leading 10th goal of the season on the power play at the 9:26 mark of the opening period, assists to Yannick Tifu and Paul Kelly (with that assist, Tifu now has a five game points streak). The Bombers continued to put the pressure on Nailers starter Andy Franck, by out shooting the Nailers 17-8 as they took the 1-0 lead into the dressing room after the first 20 minutes of play.

In the second, it didn't take long for the Bombers to increase their lead as Scott Ford joined the rush and slid the puck through the five-hole to make it 2-0 at the 1:30 mark of the second. Paul Kelly picked up the second of his three assists on the night on the Ford goal and the Bombers looked in control early. Following the Ford goal, less than two minutes later the Bombers went back to the power play, but the Nailers capitalized on a loose puck at center and Ned Havern skated in one-on-one with Bombers starter Adam Berkhoel (who was making his 15th straight start). Berkhoel decided to come out way out of the net and try to beat Havern to the loose puck, but that plan didn't work and Havern cut the Bombers lead to 2-1 at the 3:17 marker.

The Nailers would build on the momentum from the short handed goal and follow that up with three more unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead with just over 11:00 to play in the second. Shortly following the Nailers fourth goal, Paul Kelly won a face off cleanly back to Scott Ford, who then proceeded to release frustration onto the puck as he blistered a slap shot from the blue line to cut the deficit to one at 4-3 at the 13:11 mark. For the second consecutive period, the Bombers out shot the Nailers, this time 13-9 as they trailed by one heading into the third period of play.

Paul Kelly would cap off his four point night at the 4:20 mark of the third period, one timing a missile from the slot underneath the crossbar off a perfect feed from Petr Pohl to tie the game at 4-4. Franck came up big for the Nailers as the Bombers pounded the Wheeling net for 15 more shots on goal in the third, but besides the Kelly tying goal Franck kept the game tied and both teams headed to overtime. In the extra session it was Berkhoel's turn to answer at the other end, coming up with three big saves to force the shootout. Wheeling's Joe Guenther would be the only player to score for either side as the Nailers picked up the extra point the 5-4 shootout victory.

The Bombers will have a chance to earn two more points against the Nailers, this time at the Nutter Center on Saturday, January 6, at 7:00 p.m. Following the game the Bombers will auction off the special tuxedo style jerseys they wore in the 4-3 victory over the Reading Royals on New Years Day.
