January 6, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
Dayton, OH- The Dayton Bombers defeated the Wheeling Nailers 3-1 to win their sixth consecutive game at the Nutter Center on Saturday night.
For the eighth straight game, the Bombers scored on the power play to take the early lead midway through the first period. Mike Berry won a face off right back to Greg Labenski, who sent the puck through the middle of the Nailers defense and Berry beat the defense and Nailers starter Andy Franck with a gorgeous backhand to make it 1-0 at the 10:52 mark of the first.
Later in the first Wheeling would tie the game on an Eric Sonnenberg goal over the glove of Bombers starter Adam Berkhoel (who was making his 16th consecutive start on the night) to make it 1-1 at the 17:59 mark.
Both teams played fairly conservative for the most part in the second period, until the Bombers picked up their play late with 10 shots on goal in the second to the Nailers three. Mike Berry tallied his second of the night and team leading 12th goal of the season to break the tie at the 16:03 mark, by banking the puck off a Nailers defenseman and into the back of the net. The Bombers held on to the 2-1 lead and looked to add to it in the third.
Once again the Bombers defense did not allow the Nailers many opportunities to tie the game and Berkhoel would come up with a spectacular save off of a number of redirections late in the period as well. Immediately following that big save, the Bombers went down to the Wheeling end and added some insurance. Brent Walton broke in over the blue line and sent a perfect pass over to the left side as Justin Maiser slid it home for a 3-1 lead at the 13:50 mark of the third. That was all the Bombers needed, as the penalty kill made it 18 consecutive kills and getting rid of all five Wheeling power plays in the Bombers 3-1 victory.
